MAF 1101: Mooncake Making

hi peepz! it's meee again! Mod W, blogging live from the venue of LB's 1st MAF 1101: Mooncake Making Session!

yep, today, the committee of LB MAF 2006 organized a session for making mooncakes amidst the heat of preparations for mid-terms and term paper. In addition, several other Befrienders came down (or is it up) to lend a hand, literally!!

The guys met at Punggol MRT at 1130 and cos there were still latecomers (erhemz...), so we went for a simple lunch at the void deck of zenov's place. We started officially at 1230, with Ching demonstrating and teaching us the technics of stuffing the mooncake with fillings and making them.

ok, for the clueless, we DIDN'T make the mooncakes 100% by ourselves. We got the finished snowskin and fillings from Ching's aunt and then came together to put those 2 main ingredients together and voila! the mooncake is in shape!

So now, allow me to impart what we learnt onto this blog:

1) Divide the skin into equal portions, about the size of a marshmallow.

2) Roll the skin into a ball and then flatten it into the size of the base of a mug.

3) Place the filling in the middle of the skin and wrap the skin around it. While pressing the filling into the skin to keep it from oozing out, cover the filling entirely.

4) Fine tune the 'dumpling' by smoothing out the 'faultlines' on the dumpling by rubbing them. Severe 'faultlines' can occur when you put too much flour.

5) Stuff the 'dumpling' into the mould and flush the base of the mooncake with the mould.

6) Whack the mould with the opening facing up.

7) Tap the finished mooncake out.

Everybody had their try on each step of the mooncake making process and it was indeed a fun experience. Cos most of us are VERY refined people, we didn't really mess up the place a lot.

Really.

No doubts.

Finally, we had a leisure chat in the living room, a rare break from the crazy mugging we've had from the past few weeks. I mean, what is all mugging without some leisurely break? We surely have to know how to enjoy life sometimes, yar??

Mod W

Since no one replied my burning question, except for a vague: it's at bus 63 terminal, I took the liberty to locate it...

Hokkien Group's Visit On 9/9

We had our 2nd regular visit last saturday since LBFD. After that visit, LB will rest for 2 weeks before we have our MAF celebration for the elderly, a la LBFD style, on 30 Sep.

It was a gruelling 2 hours, cos me tokked the most hokkien in the 2hrs with respect to my whole life. I wondered if I was making a fool of myself with my broken hokkien with an singlish-accent. waha!!!

me led the hokkien speaking group to visit 1st the Blind Sisters before we proceeded to Uncle Lee. The 'younger' sister was at home alone (we saw the elder sis at the void deck, tho), so we guys had a nice talk with her. Weijian then was super helpful as he helped keep the conversation alive while Mingwei was my translator when 1) me couldn't find a hokkien word for what me wanted to say 2) when the Lderly slurred.

We talked about various stuff like the weather, her sis going to see 'god' at level 2 for her rheumatic leg (I couldn't understand this part where she said the 'god' helped massage her leg), her sis being lost in the new market cos it was too big and Weijian's career after he graduates. lol

Something to share (which may be old news to alot of ppl), is that the Blind Sisters are not sisters actually. According to the Elder Sis (and my 'half-a-bucket' of hokkien), they stayed together and she was actually taking care to the 'younger sis' cos she had no one willing to take care of her despite her being blind. While the flat belonged to the younger sis and the older sis paid for the rent and misc fees cos her children gave her some money every now and then.

But still, we learnt NOT to talk abt her children in front of her, cos the elder sis would go into a string of expletives regarding her 'unfilial' daughter-in-law.

In some way, they depended on each other.

The visit to Uncle Lee was the usual fare, except this time round, me was doing most of the talking, not that me talked a lot too.

He was much better this week, cos his son broght him to see a new doctor whose medicine was more effective than those he had in the past.

He then tokked abt his woking life as bus conductor, which well, me heard for a few times le. He also complained abt mdm lau... haha...

With that, we ended our visit. me left with a question in mind which the others had no answer to: Where is Rumah Tinggi?

Both the Blind Sisters and Uncle Lee mentioned Rumah Tinggi. The younger sis said the market was so big it led to Rumah Tinggi and Uncle Lee said his bus service used to go there.
